Geology and Geophysics Technicians / Technologists

At CFOL, Geology and Geophysics Technicians and Technologists play a key role in performing various technical and clerical duties that support the work of Geologists and Geophysicists. More specifically, a Geology or Geophysics Technician or Technologist may be responsible for performing the following functions:

  • Coordinate the delivery and receipt of data between the department and service centers, data brokers, and partners for both geophysical and geological data.
  • Record and catalogue all incoming data.
  • Organize and maintain computerized and manual internal data files.
  • Interface with both internal and external service groups to ensure timely, accurate and complete datasets, as per established policy and procedures.
  • Develop, implement and maintain an efficient and effective transmittal system by which data exchanges are recorded.
  • Prepare and submit applications for authorization/approval of data acquisition programs to appropriate regulatory bodies/agencies if and when they are completed.
  • Prepare requests, under the direction of the geologists and geophysicists, to transfer and transmit data, both physical and electronic, to contractors and partners as directed.
  • Maintain the seismic acquisition for expenditure control/approval system to ensure accurate and timely assignment of project costs and other general administration charges.
  • Oversee the operational maintenance of specialized department equipment and supplies. Recommend equipment additions/changes as necessary to maintain departmental efficiency with growth/usage. Expedite requests for services and supplies. Check and code invoices for correctness and track service and supply costs.
  • Access data from the computer for preliminary analyses for geologists and geophysicists.
  • Review and possibly evaluate pertinent new software that is available for the geoscientists, for both database maintenance control and process efficiency.

Geology and Geophysics Technologists and Technicians generally require a Diploma and experience in the oil and gas industry has been considered an asset. Technicians and Technologists must also be skilled in analysis, planning, organizing, meeting deadlines, and interpersonal communication.

A Technician or Technologist in this role works closely with other team members within the organization, industry both in the field and office.
